By 'Eck, It's Back: Legendary 'Cream of Manchester' Boddingtons Cask Returns to Pubs

Manchester – The legendary ‘Cream of Manchester’ is officially back on tap, as the first pint of the rebooted Boddingtons Cask ale was pulled in the city centre this morning, ending a 13-year wait for fans of the iconic bitter.

The historic moment took place at Founder’s Hall on Albert Square, where William Lees-Jones, Managing Director of Manchester’s oldest brewer JW Lees, pulled the first commercially available pint of the cask-conditioned ale in over a decade.

The launch marks a much-anticipated revival for a brand that became a cultural phenomenon in the 1990s, famed for its creamy head and a high-profile advertising campaign with the unforgettable catchphrase, "By 'eck it's gorgeous".

This homecoming is the result of a new partnership between brand owner Budweiser Brewing Group and the family-run JW Lees brewery. Brewed and distributed under licence, the revival puts the focus squarely on cask beer – naturally conditioned in the cellar and hand-pulled to perfection.

"When I joined JW Lees in 1994, Boddingtons was ‘The Cream of Manchester’ and we were in awe of their position in leading the cask beer revolution", said William Lees-Jones after pouring the inaugural pint.

"We’re proud to bring it back home, starting with Founder’s Hall, and we’re planning to restore Boddington’s as one of the UK’s leading premium cask beers, particularly here in the North West”.

First brewed in 1778, Boddingtons became more than just a beer; it was a symbol of Manchester’s soul and Northern pride. Though it disappeared from cask pumps in 2012, its legacy endured. Now, the new 4.0% ABV recipe has been designed to capture the essence of what drinkers loved about the original while giving it a fresh twist for today's market.

Today's official launch followed a secret preview for beer writers and officials from CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale) at the JW Lees Brewery in Middleton Junction on Wednesday.

Founder’s Hall will serve as the flagship pub for the relaunch. Loyal fans and new drinkers alike can raise a proper pint this weekend at a number of early champion pubs across Manchester, including Stables Tavern, Corbiere’s, Sams Chop House, The Circus Tavern, Oxford Road Tap, Piccadilly Tap, and Victoria Tap.

The brewery’s aim is to put, "Boddingtons back where it belongs: in the hands of beer lovers", with a focus on its North West heartland before a wider national rollout. For a city that never forgot its famous cream, today marks a welcome return.
